Tender loving care

Dear Tracey
I am writing this to properly express my deep appreciation of the care 'E' received from you all during the last 15 months of his life. It was very gratifying for me to see how much more content, less frustrated and less bored he was with life during those months than he had been during the previous year or so.

It was gratifying, and I think it took me a bit by surprise. It rather confirms my suspicion that among all the standards and requirements that a residential care home must satisfy these days, the most important is old fashioned ‘tender loving care’, or in contemporary jargon, unconditional positive regard. Certainly this was the most important thing for my father, and as a visitor I felt it, and saw my father respond to it.
